A truck on the roadTruck driving is one of the most important jobs in the world. The economy is dependent on the successful transportation of goods and services. However, the truck driving business is experiencing problems that are becoming an increasing cause for concern.

Shortage of Truck Drivers

Centerline Drivers say that truck driving jobs are in demand across the country. Despite this, there remains a huge lack of truck drivers.

There was an estimated shortage of 50,000 truck drivers towards the end of 2017. This could reach 174,000 by 2026. The reason for this is that there are not enough qualified truck drivers to help bring the products and goods closer to consumers.

There are a couple of reasons why there is a shortage of truck drivers. These can range from lifestyle issues to regulatory challenges. Demographically, young people show little interest in the industry, as the average for truck drivers is 49.

Women Truck Drivers

The trucking labor force lacks women drivers. While 47% of the total U.S. workforce consists of women, there are only 6% involved in the trucking business. To resolve this, fleeting companies are raising pays, offering incentives, and helping improve the conditions of drivers on the road.

Being a Truck Driver

There are four basic requirements if you want to apply as a commercial truck driver. First, you must be 21 years of age. Then, you must pass a background check and drug test. Finally, you must have a commercial trucking license. Additional requirements may be asked depending on the hiring company.

Expectations

Truck drivers must follow the 11-hour daily driving limitation. This implies being away from their families for long periods of time. As a dedicated truck driver, you might also have to work at night, during the weekends, and on holidays.
