A study sponsored by Adobe has revealed that relying too much on testing and assessment stifles creative teaching as much as it constrains innovative learning. With current system, teachers have no choice but to follow a constricting curriculum, which in turn,limits the students’ potential to succeed in future employments.
According to the study, students these days are not ready to join a work environment that requires creative thinking. This seems to be the case everywhere, in spite of the world’s continuous demand for creativity and innovation.A“transformative change,” the participants propose, could provide a creative boost into the existing education system.
Barriers to creativity
Apart from testing and assessment,the greatest barriers to creative teaching are lack of resources and restrictive curriculum. Not all is lost, though. A great number of the participants said they believe that creativity’s role in the education system will grow over the next 25 years.
Regarding the steps needed to integrate creativity in education, most of the participants agreed that additional tools and training could contribute to teaching creativity. They also believe that creativity should be integral to the curriculum. The bottom line for them is to eliminate directives that restrain creativity.
The study’s participants included 4,000 adult from the U.S.,United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia. The group is comprised of 2,000 educators from kindergarten to college and 2,000 parents of kindergarten to college students.
