A woman exercising in the gymWe often think of exercise as just a way to keep our body fit and heart healthy. While these are true, exercise does so much more for us than we realize. For instance, aside from a vacation, exercising is one of the best ways to combat stress.

The combination of movement, focus, and exertion does a good job of helping the body fight against the effects of stress. This is why it is fortunate that if you are looking for fitness classes here in Columbia, there is always one just around the corner. Just browsing through southcarolina.muvfitnessclub.com will give you many options.

Here are three ways exercise helps deal with stress:

1) Strengthens the brain

During a workout, muscle cells release a protein called FNDC5. This protein helps the formation of brown fat cells, which helps keep the body protected against diseases such as diabetes and obesity.

FNDC5 helps increase another protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is crucial for maintaining healthy neurons, creating new ones, and preventing them from breaking down when exposed to stress. As such, the more you exercise, the more you strengthen the brain against stress.

2) Releases endorphins

When exercising, the body reduces the productions of the stress hormones cortisol and instead increases endorphins. Endorphins are the body’s own painkillers. This hormone, when released into the body, produces a pleasurable or noticeable “high,” leaving you less likely to be affected by stress.

3) Builds stress resistance

We all react to stress differently and, as such, have different stress tolerance levels. Continuous exercise results in better sleep and an increase in energy. As a result, you raise your stress tolerance, making you less susceptible to its effects. This keeps you healthy longer.

Exercise is a good way to combat stress. With proper exercise, you can be healthier longer.
